“Getting Ready for Baby campaign” launched
HEAL is one of 70 organisations supporting a US campaign to get baby-focused retailers to commit to getting rid of some of the most hazardous chemicals in their products.
The Getting Ready for Baby campaign released its latest report, “What We Expect When We’re Expecting” on 13 November 2014. It looks at the role two major US baby product retailers play in ensuring only safe, non-toxic products are on store shelves.
Clean and Healthy New York is leading the Getting Ready for Baby campaign. They looked at corporate policies on products sold by Buy Buy BABY and Babies ”R” Us and compared with the Washington State database of manufacturer reports of chemicals of high concern to children. They then used the Buy Buy BABY and Babies ”R” Us store websites to assess how easy they make it to find products they identify as safer, and how many of those items there are. The findings on their policies, their reporting to Washington as manufacturers, and their presentation of information to consumers on their websites will put pressure on Babies"R"Us to take action. Their products can be purchased online in Europe.
The campaign is formally calling on these two baby shop chains, Babies R Us and BuyBuy Baby, to adopt policies that require product makers to know and disclose the chemicals and materials they use, and to phase out the use of any chemical found on the US "Hazardous 100+" list.
On the launch day, HEAL joined other partners in promoting the campaign on Facebook and Twitter.
