HEAL ‘meets and greets’ EFA members at workshop on air quality
On the occasion of a ‘Meet and Greet the EU Institutions’ training session by HEAL member the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients Association (EFA), we were given the opportunity to participate in a workshop on air quality.
Earlier in October EFA organised a two day ‘Meet and Greet the EU institutions training session’ for its members. One part of this training was a workshop on air pollution with a presentation from Scott Brockett (DG ENV) on the EC revision proposal of the ‘EU Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution’; Petros Varelidis (Environment Attaché of Greece to the EU) on air pollution priorities of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU (Jan-June 2014); and HEAL Deputy Director Anne Stauffer on our own strategy.
During the workshop Anne highlighted the importance of the voice of patient organisations in the debate on air quality and the need to focus efforts at national level in order to change and implement national air quality strategies. There are many measures that can be taken at local, regional and national level to benefit health which can directly input into wider EU legislation on air quality.
With the upcoming European Parliament elections in May 2014, this is an important time for HEAL members and patient organisations such as EFA to put forward their messages on improving air quality to benefit health. We should bring a range of actors into the discussions, including finance ministers which was a point raised during the question and answers session at the end of the workshop.
