The seed for a Global Power Shift in Istanbul
HEAL was invited to speak on coal-fired power plants and health during a recent Summit on the Global Power Shift in Istanbul. The conference brought together organisations from around the world to build new alliances and share skills and resources for a strengthened climate movement.
The Global Power Shift gathering was organised by 350.org, who aims to build a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. The Summit brought together grassroots organisations, professionals and concerned individuals who are all working on climate change issues, aiming to create new networks and synergies, provide support and initiate skill sharing.
HEAL’s Coal and Health Officer Julia Huscher was among the 500 participants, and spoke on a panel during the summit about how health arguments and active engagement of health champions can be compelling evidence to use in discussions and decisions on new coal-fired power stations around the world. Around 80 participants, most of who were young individuals from around the world followed the lively discussion. Other speakers were from China, Germany, India, and Turkey.
