BCUK: A call for ’Prevention First’ - New Manifesto challenges the Government to stop breast cancer before it starts
On 23 October, Breast Cancer UK launched its new Manifesto, ‘Prevention is better than cure: 5 pledges for 2015 and beyond’, which challenges policy makers to move beyond breast cancer ‘awareness’ to political action on the chemical causes of the disease.
Breast Cancer UK’s 5 Manifesto pledges are:
1. Prioritise the primary prevention of breast cancer; 2. Improve the regulation of chemicals; 3. Protect the unborn child from the harmful effects of chemical exposure; 4. Ban the use of Bisphenol A in food and drinks packaging; 5. Improve labelling laws and implement the ‘right to know’ about harmful chemicals
The Manifesto was launched at a Reception in the Houses of Parliament, hosted by Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Breast Cancer, Steve Brine MP. Guest speakers at the Reception included the Rt. Hon. Andy Burnham MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Professor Andreas Kortenkamp, from the Institute of Environment at Brunel University.
