EPHA – Call on new European Commission president to put people’s needs first
The European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) congratulates the newly elected EU Commission President Mr Jean-Claude Junker and urges him to commit his 2014-2019 mandate to health and the well-being of people living in Europe.
Health is a main concern for European citizens and bringing the activities of the EU in line with the people’s needs and priorities is vital for creating a union that serves the people, as Junker pledged in his European election campaign.
EPHA calls on Juncker to push for stronger health and quality employment dimensions in a Europe 2020 strategy that also supports the achievement of an inclusive economy, well-being and social inclusion.
As Junker promised to carry out social impact assessments of austerity measures and health is a fairly accurate way to measure sustainable development and inclusive growth, the new Commission should take this a step further and implement health impact assessments as well. Another area where Junker can make a difference is in the EU-US Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), where the EU Commission has the opportunity to show its commitment to public health, as well as to the protection of social rights and environmental standards.
