EPHA – Joint civil society consultation response on Europe 2020 Review
The European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) and other Brussels based NGOs including Friends of the Earth, the European Women’s Lobby, Culture Action Europe and the European Association for the Education of Adults, recently submitted their input into a consultation on the Europe 2020 Strategy Review – Moving beyond GDP towards well-being.
The civil society response highlights the importance of moving beyond GDP in measuring the effectiveness of the Europe 2020 Strategy. GDP, it states, ’leads to short-termism, over-consumption, impoverishment of cultural diversity and the downplaying or ignoring of “externalities” from land grabs, to biodiversity loss, water pollution to climate change’. It calls for a rebalancing of the social and economic priorities of the Strategy and for a strengthening of the social indicators to allow for better monitoring of implementation.
