ERS/ELF - Healthy Lungs for Life – Take the active option
On 17 November, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foundation (ELF) organised the ‘Healthy Lungs for Life – take the active option’ event in the European Parliament, Brussels. The event combined activities varying from lung health testing, presentations from keynote speakers and a roundtable discussion.
‘Healthy Lungs for Life’ is one of the largest ever lung health campaigns, raising awareness of the importance of healthy lungs to healthcare professionals, scientists, primary care, patients, policy makers and the public through a full range of events, projects and promotional activities.
Hosted by MEP Claudiu Ciprian Tănăsescu and MEP Claudia Monteiro de Aguiar, this year’s Healthy Lungs for Life focused on the theme of physical activity and the importance of remaining active, or “taking the active option” for lung health and the health of patients with lung disease.
The event aimed to promote lung health in order to alleviate suffering from disease and drive standards for respiratory medicine globally, with the use of science, education and advocacy at its core.
There is now a growing body of evidence supporting the importance of regular physical activity for lung health; both for the population in general but also for people living with chronic lung conditions. Regular physical activity has been shown to improve quality of life and fitness in healthy individuals and to reduce the risk of chronic disease.
