EUROPAEM - Invitation to a workshop in the Federal Environment Agency
HEAL member’s the European Academy of Environmental Medicine (EUROPAEM) has been involved in a project together with the German Federal Environmental Agency and the institute for social-ecological science, aiming to communicate with doctors about pharmaceuticals in the environment.
Several projects of the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and the institute for socio-ecological research (ISOE), Frankfurt/Main, have studied traces of medical drugs in the water cycle. The results not only showed that doctors have a key role in the communication with patients, as their authority enables them to promote a responsible and economical drug use; but also that doctors so far know relatively little about the problematic of substance traces in the water.
A “Handbook – communication strategies for the strengthening of environmental awareness in dealing with medical drugs”, jointly created by the UBA and the ISOE, therefore recommends to include the topic of drug traces in the education and training of doctors.
In a second project commissioned by the Federal Environment Agency, this recommendation was implemented in a first step in a course at Witten-Herdecke University. Furthermore, a training for doctors was created together with the regional medical association of Baden-Württemberg.
The hand book will be presented at a workshop in Dessau, Germany on 16 July along with the results of the implementation project.
