Foundation Alborada - Pesticide Action Week and Glyphosate in Madrid
A memorable event took place on 4 April in Madrid, on the occasion of Pesticide Action Week 2016. Two HEAL members Fundación Alborada and Fundación Vivo Sano plus two other Spanish organisations Ecologistas en Acción and Asociación Española de Educación Ambiental joined forces to raise awareness on the consequences of pesticides and GMOs for health, the environment and social justice.
A conference and a workshop for children were held at CaixaForum Madrid, with over 100 attendees and speakers from Spain and Mexico. Glyphosate was one of the main topics considered, at a moment in which its re-authorisation was being discussed in the European Parliament. Children at the workshop learnt why it is essential to avoid pesticides and how to make natural insect repellents.
During the week, Fundación Alborada and other NGOs concerned about glyphosate sent letters to the Spanish Ministers of Health and Environment, asking the Spanish Government and the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to put citizen’s health above any other interest. This initiative was followed by an open letter to the Ministers, already signed by over 150 organisations.
Three large cities in Spain - Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza - have already committed to remove glyphosate use in parks and green areas.
