Foundation Alborada - Why is organic food more “valuable”?
During the 10th edition of Pesticide Action Week 2015, a professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and one of the most renowned experts on organic agriculture in Spain, Dolores Raigón showed Foundation Alborada why organic food is more ‘valuable’ in several ways: according to the costs of production, the nutritional benefits for consumers and the sustainability for the environment.
Spain is the first producer country of organic agriculture in the EU, but the market of these products still needs to reach the ordinary citizen, who finds these products mostly unaffordable.
On 28 March, visitors to a modern organic market in Madrid called El huerto de Lucas were invited to see, smell and taste the differences between organic and conventional products. Colour, water content, fiber, density to name a few, are factors consumers must consider when choosing food to buy.
