IEW: Conference cycle on health and environment impacts of different fossil fuel energy sources
Inter-Environnement Wallonie recently organised three free conferences in French about health, environmental and economic impacts of fossil energy. The first one took place on 12 November entitled Oil: the dark side of ‘black gold’ (Pétrole: le côté obscur de l’or noir) which focused on what cost will local communities and biodiversity have to pay due to oil drilling projects in protected areas?
The second conference took place on 20 November on Shale gas: revolution or mystification? (Gaz de schiste: révolution ou mystification ?). Based on American experience feedback, discussions focused on if Europe should follow considering the health and environmental impacts?
The third conference takes place on 27 November of which HEALer Julia Huscher is participating. The focus of this final session is entitled The coal success: an illusion? (Charbon: l’illusion d’un bon filon?). Questions will be raised about if the health bill of coal can be balanced by new carbon capture and storage technologies? Some banks do believe in it and continue investing in this non-renewable energy, however, should coal be our future?
