NVSM: Health care: more than only medicine

Geert Messiaen, General Secretary of the Belgian National Union of Liberal Mutualities (NVSM), has recently published his fourth book ‘Health care: more than only medicine’.

This book deals with the main challenges that Belgian mutual health insurers have to tackle, and looks at the threats on health care accessibility and the structural financial problems in the system. One of the key words used in the book is solidarity, on which all social security systems are based.

Since Geert Messiaen was the initiator of the Belgian mutual health insurance working group on environmental illnesses in 2010, he dedicated a chapter to the issue as well. In 2011, a first common brochure was published on indoor pollution and how to avoid it. In 2012, the working group started with research on the relationship between the exposure to particulate matter, other pollutants and the incidence of heart and respiratory illnesses, together with researchers from the University of Louvain.

Geert Messiaen’s book is available in Dutch ‘Gezondheidszorg: meer dan alleen maar geneeskunde’ (€10). To order, please contact: isabelle.flebus@mut400.be
