The EU’s proposed 2040 climate target to reduce domestic emissions by 90% - while allowing up to 3% to be met through international carbon credits – risks undermining health protections. The Health and Environment Alliance calls on member states to strengthen their climate commitments in order to protect health, rather than delay and weaken overdue action.
HEAL is among a number of organisations who have written to the new Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen to offer our help and expertise in shaping policies to support a transition to fair, healthy, and sustainable food and farming systems.
This year’s historic consensus following the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture is a major turning point and a golden opportunity for the fresh EU mandate to correct the serious flaws in today’s food systems. With a breakthrough report where stakeholders agreed that “business-as-usual is not an option”, Commissioner Hansen has a mandate to deliver the ambitious transformations that Europe’s citizens so urgently need.
As part of the EU Food Policy Coalition we stand ready to support the Commissioner in his new role, and help bring about a sustainable, competitive, resilient and fair future for food and farming. To protect the health of Europeans, HEAL is especially calling for the full implementation of the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive.
