HEAL has sent a letter to permanent representations of EU member states and EU environment ministers today, calling on their support and leadership to ensure that previous commitments made for a high level of health and environment protection will remain at the heart of the 2024-2029 EU Commission mandate, including delivering on the health protective measures promised in the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) and the revision of REACH with no further delay.
Air pollution is the main environmental health risk in Spain and Europe. Everyone is vulnerable to its effects and goes beyond individual control. A revised Ambient Air Quality EU Directive, now under negotiations, will contribute to achieving European climate goals.
We must not waste this moment if we want to prevent the premature death of thousands of people, as well as the health burden of chronic diseases – including heart disease and stroke, cancer, asthma attacks amongst others. The AAQD will be discussed by Ministers of Environment and will bring the opportunity to have better and cleaner air, and the Spanish Presidency of the Council has the chance to make a difference.
Salud por Derecho, Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), Ecologistas en Acción, IS Global and the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) organise a panel discussion on 29 November, 11:00-12:30.
